The latest exhibition at Small Green Door featured immersive audio-visual experiences from a range of video artists. Curator and co-founder of Los Angeles Video Artists Eddy Varakitpongse wanted to offer total freedom to video artists who often bound by the demands of museums, musicians, and venues. This was an exhibition for artists to bring their most experimental projects. The refreshingly uncommercial sentiment emanated throughout the show.
Eddy chose 8 innovative artists to show their work at a LAVA Relaunch and Showcase event at Small Green Dooron November 4th. The night featured experiences from Agnes Stauber, Animal Charm, @CUTMOD, David Glicksman, Jssn Duller and Eddy Vajarakitipongse, Pete Thornbury, and Grant Davis VJ Culture.
From Atlantic Blvd, passersby could see that something unique was happening in Small Green Door. The windows were alive with light, color, and movement. Upon entering the space, event goers were confronted with 4 unique installations. A binaural zone built from metal pyramids invited people in to sit and relax. Across the room was a responsive light projection that moved in accompaniment with whoever was standing in front of it.
A freestanding AV experience in the form of a shopping cart punctuated the middle of the main space. One room in the back of the space had bulb lights strewn about the floorspace, lit by a changing wave of colors. The other room featured a mixed reality experience with sensors that created a fully interactive experience for both the VR-headset wearer and the observer.
No corner of the studio was forgotten, there was even a small peephole installation in the bathroom. Through the hole was a delicately-made tin foil man camping in front of moving visuals.
