Small Green Door Presents Isaac Ruelas: Poor Kids Eat Rich Kids, an exhibition of sculpture, music, fashion, and print that explores the identity of a poor Latinx person of Los Angeles in 2019. PKERK is an intuitive expression and exploration into the abstract consciousness of a Probrecitx.
Through their exploration of this complex identity landscape, the exhibition pieces become a powerful act of resistance against the white capitalist narrative that to be poor is to be disposable.
The use of cardboard in each sculpture evokes the visual similarity between the construction material and the artist's own identity as a brown person. The material symbolizes the ways in which the Latinx community is both everywhere and yet still universally ignored similar to the role that overlooked cardboard plays in society. The artist incorporates discarded objects found in Highland Park, an area of Los Angeles rapidly undergoing gentrification.
The opening night celebration is in collaboration with creatives representing aspects of Los Angeles culture, including tattoos by local artist Brujita and hand-brewed elixirs from Inquisitor Brewing. Isaac Ruelas is a non-binary Spiritualist, Artist and Los Angeles native. They find influence and inspiration in the cultural diversity around them. Having studied Cultural Psychology at Azusa Pacific University and Art at Cal State LA, Ruelas hopes to influence the human psyche through art. Currently, they are certified as an Energy Healer Practitioner and practice across So Cal, working with diverse groups hosting healing ceremonies. They also work across the nation teaching models of change with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
