Small Green Door Cinema presents Silent Salute: Women Directors of Silent Film, a celebration of the achievements and artistry of women who contributed to the Silent Era of Hollywood (mid 1890s - late 1920s), as well as those who carry on this timeless genre today. By looking into the past and present, we consider the potential of silent film going into the future.
This one-night event will feature a screening of the selected films with live musical accompaniment, an exhibition of silent film memorabilia, and thematic hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Small Green Door Cinema is proud to showcase Frances Damien Arpaia Let’s go to the Trans Ladies Picnic (2017), Catherine Corman’s Alice in Wonderland (2015), Alexandra Velasco’s Untitled (2018), Chanelle Tyson’s I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (2017), and Tressie Souder’s groundbreaking classic A Woman’s Error (1922). Our selection of films exemplifies the best qualities of this manifold and ever-evolving genre including textual narration, gestural acting, and live accompaniment to be performed by composer Vivian Khor.
In addition to the film screening, Los Angeles Video Artists (LAVA) will project digital and film stills from classic silent movies directed by pioneering filmmakers. In the spirit of classic cinemas, their projection equipment will feature both vintage and modern designs.
