Small Green Door Presents SCOPE, an exhibition of paintings by New-York-based artist Joseph Santarpia that reconsiders the fraught, often permeable boundary conditions of the human body in its relation to the external world.

Through a visual language created with alcohol ink on Yupo paper, Santarpia manipulates synthetic materials and chemical processes to explore contemporary issues of embodiment, including the interconnections of trauma, materiality, and probability, to better understand how the human body informs, and is informed by, a world in which stability and continuity are placed under constant threat.

The evening will feature 10 paintings, both large and small, accompanied by an immersive installation of draped plastic film, which will offer visitors a visceral-yet-atmospheric experience of the bodily interior throughout the gallery’s 5,000 square foot space. The work will remain on view through October 1st by appointment only.

Joseph Santarpia is a New York-based artist who explores the ephemerality of the human form through a variety of media. Informed by his own bodily injuries, Santarpia uses alcohol ink and paint to render visible the structural and communicative capacities that define the complex relationship between exteriority and interiority in the human form. His work has been exhibited in galleries across the east coast as he pursues his Masters in Fine Arts at Stony Brook University.
