AN ARTIST-LED PROCESS

Our head designer Leo Estevez, is classically trained in fine art. This guides our atypical branding approach. We start with an exploration into texture, color, and material to find a combination that resonates with a brand. The process is about unveiling a brand’s identity through the design process. This opens the door for our clients to see themselves in a new way. This style is best exemplified in our work with Gonzalez Goodale Architects.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN MADE DIGITAL

When Gonzalez Goodale Architects came to Small Green Door, they hadn’t updated their branding in over 10 years. It was time to reframe how people thought about their work. The first step we took in this rebranding process was to understand their design ethos. We visited the office to meet the team, talk through the design philosophy in architecture, and get a feel for the business. The team works out of a stunning, window-lit studio in Pasadena.  We experienced creativity, social consciousness, and community drive in the office, but found that these elements were absent from their digital presence.

After these conversations, Leo began experimenting with lines, shapes, and fonts. Over the course of the following weeks, Leo filled a notebook with logo variations, fonts, textures, and concepts. We created digital iterations of the designs that resonated with the GGA team.

Once we settled on a brand and mark, Small Green Door created a style guide for architectural documents, letterhead, and business cards that integrated with the new branding and website.

A WEBSITE THAT TELLS A HISTORY

With 20 years of work history, the old website suffered from information overload. We wanted to translate the client’s breadth of architecture experience while maintaining a smooth user experience. We achieved this by funneling traffic towards a contact page. The site gives enough information for people to get a feel for the work, but keeps the experience accessible and authentic. This new website is built around a custom Shopify template that the client can easily maintain and update. The new site mirrors GGA’s architectural design philosophy with a subtle white border, simplified calls to action, and immersive photography.
